RoboJackets: RoboNAV

RoboNAV is a subset of the Georgia Tech competitive robotics team RoboJackets. Each year, RoboNAV builds a rover to compete in the University Rover Challenge

For my entire time on the team, I have been part of the mechanical arm sub team, on both design and manufacturing. Last year, along with completing a 6-month onboarding project, I worked on the manufacturing of several parts of the rover, especially those needing to be lathed. Now, I am leading the design of the new rover's end effector, and collaborating with the rest of the arm sub team to make sure all parts seamlessly work together in the final rover.

The Competition

The University Rover Challenge is a competition hosted annually at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. The competition challenges teams with a series of autonomous and teleoperated tasks, intended to simulate the tasks of a real rover on Mars. Apart from the assigned tasks, all rovers are built to withstand the foreign terrain that is present in the desert in Hanksville.

"We take this engineering stuff seriously"

In RoboNAV, we value interdisciplinary cooperation and data-driven decisions. Before we begin our design process, each idea has to be justified with hand calculations. As the design process continues, we host regular design reviews with all relevant members of each involved sub team, to provide constructive criticism and effective planning on how to move forward with the next design iteration.
