University of Delaware SHARK project

Submersible

May 2023 - Dec 2023

This project was done through the University of Delaware and in collaboration with the U.S. Navy. The goal of the project was to prove the validity of a possible marine robotics education program by creating a simple parts list and building a functioning submersible using widely available tools and cheap parts.

This submersible itself uses bio-inspired fins to propel itself efficiently in water, and has an ultrasonic sensor and ballast for depth control. The entire system is sealed with an acrylic plate and a custom-made silicon gasket.

Skills Developed

Custom Gaskets: Using silicon molding to make gaskets for covers and windows.

Laser Cutting: Setting up and executing a cutting sequence for the acrylic lid.

Waterproofing: Making custom screws that feed wires through to the interior of a chassis.

Compliant Parts: Application of bio-inspired propulsion.

Advanced 3D Printing: Drop-in nuts, compliant prints, controlling mass for buoyancy, and waterproofing.
